Advent 2020

Dear Members of Faith,

It has been the practice at Faith for many years to gather an offering for a “Birthday Gift for Jesus.” Putting Jesus on our gift list and setting aside some money for Him whose birth we are celebrating is a marvelous way for us to help keep Jesus at the center of our Christmas preparations and activities. Not only do we prepare our hearts and minds during Advent by attending services on Sundays and Wednesday and spending more time in prayer and devotional reading, but by putting aside some money for a “Birthday Gift for Jesus” we are giving an outward, concrete expression of our faith.

It is very easy to complain—and rightly so—about the secularism encroaching upon, in fact, drowning out what Christmas is truly about: the birth of our Savior! It is so easy to complain—and rightly so—about the commercialism that engulfs Christmas. It is so easy to complain about the “holidays” replacing Christmas. Here is a wonderful opportunity for us to take a stand. In love of our Lord who has entrusted us with money, let us use it for the spread of the Gospel so that other people who do not know Jesus as their Savior from sin, death, devil and hell can come to know Him, trust in Him and love and serve Him—now and eternally.

Our “Birthday Gift for Jesus” will be used to help a missionary bring the Good News About Jesus to people that we will probably never get a chance to meet. This year we will use the monies that we bring in to help support Rev. Dr. Charles Cortright, one of our LCMS missionaries in Riga, Latvia. He teaches at the Luther Academy of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Latvia (ELCL), an LCMS partner church. He assists in the formation of ELCL pastors and guest seminarians from other countries attending the Academy. He teaches seminars and makes presentations to pastors and church workers throughout the region. Charles also serves as the Eurasia region’s chaplain providing pastoral care to the other LCMS personnel serving in this region. You can learn more about him at the synod’s website:">

You may give this special offering, your Birthday Gift For Jesus, either by placing it in the offering plate at one of our Christmas services, or you may mail your offering to the church if you are unable to attend any of our Christmas services.  You may also contribute to the offering through the E-giving page of this website in the Special Donations section.  If you haven't signed up for this secure method of making contributions, 2020 is the year to do so and can be done easily.

Wishing you a blessed Advent season and joyous Christmas,

Pastor Grabenhofer
